Taylor Shaw has won four awards and been highly commended for a fifth at the LACA North East and Scotland Awards for Excellence.
Cathryn Wilson, manager at Taylor Shaw, won the Outstanding Achievement Award; Gemma Allen from Stephenson Way Infants won the Golden Rolling Pin Award; the Durham Area Management Team won the Management Team of the Year; and the Durham Operational Team won the Award for Innovation.
The winning innovation was Durham’s Pumpkin Challenge, which launched at around 12 schools in County Durham and used Jack O’ Lantern carving and pumpkin cooking sessions as fun was to get children to think about food waste and how it can be reduced. Children also brought their old pumpkins in after Halloween to be converted into useful energy through anaerobic digestion.
Margaret McGregor from Cestria Primary was highly commended in the Outstanding Achievement category.
“School catering is about so much more than putting food on a plate. From increasing meal uptake through themed lunches and educating children on where food comes from to engaging them in important issues like food waste – the team really has gone above and beyond. I’m delighted to see their passion and creativity recognised,” said Lynda Walker, general manager of Taylor Shaw.
