Andrew Taylor won Street Food Dish of the Year and £1,000 in prize money for his signature creation of Cobra beer batter chicken chapati with triple-cooked Bombay potato fries.
A chef from Restaurant Associates took home the main prize at the B&I StrEAT Food Awards for the second year in a row. Andrew Taylor won Street Food Dish of the Year and £1,000 in prize money for his signature creation of Cobra beer batter chicken chapati with triple-cooked Bombay potato fries.
The event, which saw 16 finalists from 16 different contract caterers cooking three different dishes in just 55 minutes, was held at Islington Metal Works in London on 21st March 2019. Dan Kirkpatrick from Angel Hill Food Co was named Street Food Chef of the Year after incorporating products provided by the sponsors to come up with his Vietnamese smoked caramel and soy chicken. Tom Frost from Elior won Best Vegan Street Food Dish for his avocado scotch egg, which was made using Quorn.
The judging panel included consultant Vic Laws MBE, Steve Scuffell from the Craft Guild of Chefs, BBQ Ben Bartlett and Jeni Edwards from IjEss Consulting. Of Taylor’s winning dish, Edwards said: “Well balanced as a whole, it really came together. The spices were authentic and not overpowering and the tomato chutney was homemade and delicious. Everything about it was authentic – even the beer used in the batter was local to the origin of the dish. The flavour combination just worked.”
The other talented finalists came from Amadeus, Aramark, Artizian, bartlett mitchell, BaxterStorey, CH&Co, Genuine Dining Company, ISS, Mellors, Radish, Thomas Franks, T(n)S Catering Management and Vacherin.
The event sponsors were Bewley’s, Birra Meretti, Britvic, Electrolux, Farm Frites, Love Joes, LWS, Major, Old EL Paso, Planglow, Quorn and Startle. For more information, go to www.bandistreatfoodawards.co.uk.
